How to Install a Car Battery: Step-by-Step

As with most auto repairs, you need to park the car with the parking brake engaged. Turn off the engine and let the engine cool. When moving the battery, be extremely careful to avoid spilling battery acid. Battery acid is highly corrosive and can cause chemical burns. Always wear rubber gloves and protective eyewear.

Once it’s safe to start your battery installation, follow these steps:

1. Using a wrench, loosen the nut that secures the black cable to the battery. If the nut sticks, don’t use a screwdriver or another tool on it. Try to loosen it more with the wrench until it gives. If you still can’t get it, try some penetrating oil.
2. Twist and pull the black cable off.
3. Follow the same steps to remove the red battery cable from the positive terminal.
